Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
